This is Gyro Beach, Kelowna, beautiful as always, but this year there’s something you can’t miss from above: just how low the water has become. The Okanagan is one of Canada’s driest regions, typically receiving only around 280–300 mm of precipitation throughout the year. But 2026 has been exceptionally dry, with Kelowna recording only about 90 mm by mid-July. The result? Record-low water levels across the Okanagan, including Okanagan Lake. From the ground, it can be easy to overlook. From the air, the difference is hard to miss. Still beautiful. Still the Okanagan. Located in South Pandosy, MOVALA brings a modern, terraced architectural presence to an area that has traditionally been defined by low-rise neighbourhoods, the lake and the surrounding mountains. Location: 3340 Lakeshore Road in Kelowna’s South Pandosy neighbourhood, near Gyro Beach. Developer: Developed by @stober.group, a Kelowna-based developer with more than 60 years of history in the Okanagan. Two towers: MOVALA consists of two terraced residential towers, one at 10 storeys and the other at 14 storeys. 325 homes: The development includes approximately 325 residences, including condos, townhomes and penthouses. Mixed-use: The development incorporates residential homes alongside retail/commercial space and live/work units, rather than being purely residential. 40,000+ sq. ft. of amenities: Indoor and outdoor amenity areas total more than 40,000 square feet. Lake-oriented design: MOVALA was designed around the Okanagan landscape, with the concept centred on Mountain, Valley and Lake and views toward the surrounding landscape. Architecture: The project was designed by Meiklejohn Architects. A changing neighbourhood: Its location and scale make it a good example of how South Pandosy and the Kelowna waterfront are becoming increasingly urban and vertical. Some days, simply seeing the sky feels like someth Some days, simply seeing the sky feels like something to be thankful for. Today is the first day in what feels like many that we can once again see the blue above us, Lake Okanagan stretching out below, and the mountains in the distance. And those clear skies mean something even more important: aerial firefighting crews can get back to work. Shown here are several AT802 Fire Boss aircraft from @conair.aerial.firefighting, filling their 3,028-litre tanks on Lake Okanagan before heading back out to the Bald Range wildfires, guided by the Rockwell Turbo Commander 690A bird dogs. There’s something incredibly reassuring about watching these aircraft head into the sky with a full load of water, knowing how hard so many crews are working to protect our communities, forests and homes. Clear skies don't mean the danger is gone, but days like today give us a little more hope. Hope that the fires can be brought under control, that conditions will improve, and that everyone working on the front lines can get home safely. It Only Takes a Spark. Right now, many families a It Only Takes a Spark. Right now, many families and communities are living with the uncertainty and heartbreak that wildfires bring. My thoughts are with everyone who has been affected and with the firefighters and first responders working tirelessly to protect lives and homes. It's also a reminder that preventing the next wildfire starts with all of us. A single lit cigarette tossed from a vehicle or discarded on a trail can ignite dry grass in seconds. In these conditions, one small spark can become a fast-moving wildfire with devastating consequences. If you smoke, please dispose of your cigarette safely, never out a car window, onto the ground, or into dry vegetation. It only takes a moment to make a safer choice.
