Relocating across the country is one of those life decisions that sounds exciting… and a little overwhelming. I know this because I’ve lived it.
In late 2022, my husband and I packed up our life in Ontario and made the drive west to Kelowna — with our dog, our cat, and a 26-foot U-Haul in tow. Four long days on the road. Countless coffees. Snow-covered mountain passes. More than a few moments of “are we really doing this?” And yet, when we finally arrived in the Okanagan, we knew we were exactly where we were meant to be.
The Reality of a Cross-Country Move
There’s the romantic idea of relocation — sunshine, lakes, vineyards, and a slower pace of life — and then there’s the reality. Long stretches of highway. Navigating unfamiliar cities. Adjusting to new routines. Letting go of what’s familiar while stepping into the unknown.
The drive itself was no small feat. Four days of carefully planned stops, managing pets, watching the weather, and keeping a fully loaded truck moving safely across the country. By the time we rolled into Kelowna, we were exhausted… but excited.
What struck us almost immediately was the pace. Life here felt different. More relaxed. Less rushed. People took time to talk. To enjoy where they were. At first, that change felt noticeable — even a little strange — but within a few months, it started to feel natural. And before we knew it, the Okanagan felt like home.
How the Okanagan Becomes Home Faster Than You Expect
Time has a way of moving quickly when you’re settling into a place that fits. One season rolled into the next. We learned our favourite neighbourhood walks, our go-to coffee spots, and the rhythm of life shaped by lake days, winery evenings, and mountain views.
Looking back now, it’s amazing how quickly the transition happened — and how deeply connected we already feel to this community.
Lessons I Didn’t Expect — But Now Use Every Day
What I didn’t anticipate was how much that experience would shape me as a realtor.
